Has anyone done an engine swap ?
« on: January 10, 2009, 05:13:55 AM »

Is there anyone here who has experience with engine swaps ?
I'm thinking of putting a bigger lump in my car , but want to know the basics before I rush into things.

I just finished my first engine swap  .

Few things to what you will need to buy do:
* Engine Hoist/Puller
* Wrench and ratchets
* Hammer
* Jack Stands (for working under the car)
* Fluids

Few things that you will need to do:
* Drain Absolutely all fluids!  Including the transmission fluids.
* Take pictures or label all plugs and where they were plugged into.
Most of the time you will need to drop the transmission to remove the engine.  If this is the case you will need to remove your tires and drive axles. Now this may be different for RWD cars.
* Take your time when removing the engine, get a friend to help, you don't want to break any lines.  This applies for when you are installing the engine back in.

If you want to have some pictures for reference, you can look at my engine swap thread here.

If you are putting in an engine that is in the same family as the original engine it can be quite easy. For example Mitsubishi FTO's come with a 2 litre non-turbo 6A12 engine.

6A13's which are 2.5 litre versions of the same thing (but only come in Galants and Legnums) bolt straight in, or for even more fun you can throw in a 6A13TT which has two turbos.

If something doesn't just bolt in then it depends a lot on the car into which it is going. Something RWD is always going to be a lot easier

That is very true, I swapped in the same engine family just turbo charged.  Not much fabrication was needed.  But if you put in an engine thats completely different, you will need to modify motor mounts etc.

It should be an easy swap. Its a special engine only used in a few models of my car. The car now has a 1.6l engine , that should be 115bhp. And I would swap it to a 2.0l with 154bhp.

I'm not sure if the radiator , fuel pump and exhaust are up to it. Any advice is welcome.

I found a company that could do the swap and they made a decent price. I don't think I could do it myself. Even with the help of some friends.

The radiator should be ok, as per the fuel pump. Something you won't know for sure unless you find out that the 1.6 and 2.0 share the same part numbers for those, or if you simply drive it and see. Fuel pumps are cheap anyway, I'd probably try and locate one from a 2.0

I would probably replace the exhaust system with a 2.25" or 2.5" system. The exhaust for the old 1.6 is probably tiny.
